The movie site has been a popular attraction for decades, but the seeds for the Aug. And they’ve been coming to Dyersville, Iowa, ever since the Kevin Costner movie became an instant classic in 1989. It just shows that if you build it, they will come. The Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds are already slated to play in the sequel next August. But Major League Baseball’s “ Field of Dreams” game was a bona fide hit complete with a walk-off home run for a true Hollywood ending. “Those images will never change.In any other setting, it might have been considered too corny for its own good. “While the substantial private investment will expand and enhance our facilities, we are deeply committed to preserving the romantic experience of the Field of Dreams, including the views, the baseball diamond, the farmhouse and the cornfield,” Go the Distance COO Dan Evans said in a statement. Go the Distance's property, which added 100 acres to the original 190 acres of the family farm and movie site, will also continue working as a farm. Go the Distance expects the development will add 170 new full-time equivalent jobs and that events held there will result in more than $25 million in direct annual spending. The program is expected to help fund projects like the site in Dyersville. Kim Reynolds announced plans for the state to allocate $100 million of federal money to tourism projects through the Destination Iowa program. The Reds, one of the teams scheduled to play at the site this August, beat the White Sox in the thrown 1919 World Series. In the film, Costner portrayed an Iowa farmer who plows over his corn to build a baseball field where the ghosts of Joe Jackson and other members of the banished 1919 Chicago White Sox can play. The site has already become a popular tourist attraction for sports fans and movie buffs. Thomas’ group, which purchased controlling interest in the movie site last year for an undisclosed amount, has high hopes for the overhaul, which is expected to be completed in phases by the end of 2023.

Go the Distance, which owns and operates the site, was scheduled to announce a massive makeover Thursday morning, using $80 million in private investment to build youth baseball and softball fields, team dormitories and a hotel, among other improvements, near the movie site, in rural Dyersville, Iowa. The new owners of the "Field of Dreams" movie site hope people will come to the iconic farm again, just as James Earl Jones’ character prophesied in the 1989 film.Īnd, now, they're planning to give people another reason to come.
